Kindergarten – Lesson – The Letter “R”

Grade Level: Kindergarten                                                                                              Lesson: The Letter “R”

The Letter “R”

Learning Objective: Students will become more familiar with the letter “R” as well as learning new words such as “rainbow, ring, rake, rocket, radio, rabbit, robot and rope.”

Standards:                                                                                                                            Reading 1.11 Distinguish orally stated one-syllable words and separate into beginning or ending sounds.

Materials: Reggie Rabbit worksheet, crayons, scissors, glues, and trashcans.

Scissors

Anticipatory Set:       I will introduce the rabbit as Reggie Rabbit. I will show them the capital “R” and lower case “r.” I will say that we want to glue all the words that start with the letter R on his stomach.

Instruction:       I will introduce new words with flashcards. We will go through the entire worksheet so the students will have a chance look at the pictures and say it out loud. I will emphasize the sound “R” to make sure that they understand what “R” sound like.  At the bottom of the worksheet, we will go through the pictures and sound out each word then circle the ones that has the “R” beginning sound.  On the right of the worksheet, we will go through the list and sound out each word.  I will ask the students to say out the words and then have them tell me which ones begin with the “R” sound.  For example, I will ask the students “does egg start with the sound “R” or does fruits start with the sound “R,” how about rainbow? I will also tell them to first cut out the pictures that have the “R” beginning sound, then glue them, and finally color the entire picture.

Guided Practice/Independent Practice: Each student will get a copy of the Reggie Rabbit worksheet.  They will start cutting the pictures that have the “R” sound, then glue and color them.

Closure:       We will review all the words that the children have learned using the flashcard and also have them say the words out loud when looking at the finish pictures on the rabbit.

Assessment:       This lesson will be considered a success if the children understand that “rainbow, ring, rake, rocket, radio, rabbit, robot and rope” have “R” beginning sound.  It is also a success if the students learn and recognize new words on the flash cards.
